Education
My most recent qualification was a research only programme. My dissertation explored the nature of informal urban sanitation in Phomolong, one of the largest informal settlements in Pretoria, South Africa. My research contended that the historical continuities of segregative spatial planning had implications on service delivery both at macro and micro levels. The persistence of inefficient sanitation provision can be understood in the wider context of citizenship where people living in informal settlements are considered to be a problem and are ultimately denied the rights of citizens. The inadequacy of sanitation therefore took on a gendered dimension where, to an extent, women bear the brunt of self-managed sanitation facilities
The programme offered an advanced cross-disciplinary study of development processes – history of the field of study, epistemological questions of theory, research methods, and the empirical contemporary world of development practice. While the focus is on global processes, emphasis is placed on local and regional examples and on practical applications to local and regional situations.
A three undergraduate programme I gained an in-depth knowledge and understanding of contemporary world politics and related changes in the international system.
